Skull
and Bones from the RMS Rhone |
|
These were recovered from the RMS Rhone in the 1960's by Bert Kilbride. For the short story in Bert's own voice please Click here skull.html There are a few more that are not pictured. I want to return these to the family of whoever they belong to. Bert has always called him Steve Kenyon and said he was the ships carpenter.
Bert's story goes like this, "I was digging in the sand at the the bottom of the Rhone, near where I had found a tool box, when I felt what I thought was a coconut. I fanned the sand away and there was a skull! As I continued to fan the sand a rib cage appeared. The brown shirt was still around it holding it together. In the pocket of the shirt was a snuff box. On the snuff box there was ingraved the letter "S" and the name "Kenyon". I wrote to the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company asking for the ships passenger and crew list. After about a month I recieved the information I had requested. On the crew list I found that Steve Kenyon was the Ships Carpenter. So unless Steve loaned his snuff box to someone else, this must be Steve."
This is the skull with the only remaining piece of the shirt. (Now we all know Bert was a great story teller. Having been around him for over 26 years and married to him for over 20 years there have been plenty of times that I have asked him if this was a true story, even as recently as last year while I was writting a screen play about Steve. Bert always swore up and down that it is totally true. But I would still like to have the material tested and I would love to see if there is any DNA in the bones. The screen play I have written about Steve ends with his bones going home and being buried with his family. I would like to see my screen play become a true story.
